Meetings and SymposiaBusiness and HIV/AIDS in South AfricaThe UCLA Program in Global Health convened a think tank meeting in South Africa June 2006. The meeting assembled business, academic, and government thought leaders to develop. a research agenda containing recommendations for economic, legal, clinical, epidemiologic, and social science investigations. The meeting provided a forum to: 1) review recommended "best practices" for southern Africa businesses related to HIV/AIDS; 2) review available surveys describing the programs and responses of businesses in southern Africa; 3) review available data on the preventive and therapeutic health productivity, economic, and social impact of southern African business programs; 4) deliberate questions such as the viability of programs in HIV/AIDS for small- and medium-sized businesses, and the role of the private sector; 5) identify evidence-based recommendations and strategies for advocating implementation in the southern African region; and 6) identify research gaps and strategies for remediation through targeted investigations in South Africa. The outcomes of the meeting are to be published in a special issue of the journal AIDS.
