South AfricaIn collaboration with South African partner institutions, PGH has undertaken a number of research, training, and policy initiatives in the Republic of South Africa and the Southern African region. Partner institutions include the Aurum Institute for Health Research, Centre for AIDS Development, Research and Evaluation (CADRE), Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), and the Perinatal HIV Research Unit (PHRU) and Reproductive Health & HIV Research Unit (RHRU) of the University of the Witwatersrand. PGH currently conducts two major HIV/AIDS research projects in South Africa in collaboration with local and international universities. The largest, Project Accept, is an NIMH-funded HIV prevention trial with sites in South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, and Zimbabwe. UCLA serves as the multisite coordinating center and partners with the PHRU in Soweto and HSRC in Vulindlela, South Africa. The second project, Positive Prevention: South Africa, is a formative research effort conducted in partnership with the RHRU in Johannesburg. In addition, UCLA PGH collaborates with Columbia University on the MAC AIDS Fund Leadership Initiative. The Leadership Initiative is a one-year training program designed to help cultivate emerging women leaders in South Africa who will make a major contribution to HIV/AIDS prevention advocacy at the local, regional, or national levels. The focus of the program is on reducing the spread of HIV and the impact of AIDS by addressing the role of gender inequality.
