Acute HIV Infection Study

Detection of HIV infection during the period immediately after transmission presents a critical opportunity for prevention and treatment of disease, but HIV infection has traditionally been detected by use of a test that may not detect antibodies to HIV for up to 6 months after infection, exactly when virus levels  and risk of transmission are the highest. Using an innovative testing algorithm that has been successfully applied to routine HIV testing programs in the U.S. and abroad, we will apply viral load testing to serum samples collected as part of established HIV counseling and testing programs at two sites in Lima, Peru.
