EpicentroThe UCLA Program in Global Health has worked with Lima's gay community to create an independent, nonprofit organization called Epicentro whose mission is to improve the lives of gay men in Peru through community building, social and economic empowerment, and the promotion of healthy lifestyles. Partners in the project include Magnet, Pangaea Global AIDS Foundation, and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. Epicentro works to counter the spread of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among gay men in Peru by supporting community development and offering HIV/STI testing and prevention services as an integral part of gay community life. By integrating gay community development, social interaction, and health care services for gay and bisexual men, we address the underlying social causes of sexual risk behavior, increase detection and treatment of existing STIs, and encourage the long-term development of a healthy gay community that can independently adapt to the future challenges of HIV/AIDS and other STIs. |
