Dr. Eddy Segura is originally from Lima, Peru, where he earned his MD degree (2002) and MSc in Epidemiology (2008), both from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH). Under the mentorship of Arthur L. Reingold, and with the support of a Fogarty International Center Training Grant, he completed his MPH in 2009 at the School of Public Health at the University of California in Berkeley.
Since graduating from medical school, Dr. Segura has focused mostly on infectious disease research ranging from leptospirosis and malaria, to his present work in HIV and STIs in vulnerable populations in Peru. He has published numerous studies on these topics in affiliation with the UPCH Tropical Medicine Institute and School of Public Health, as well as with the UCLA Program in Global Health. His other activities included significant involvement as a UPCH research consultant on sexual health topics through systematic reviews and surveys implementation to WHO, PAHO, UNAIDS, IDRC (Canada) and CARE (Peru). He has also directly collaborated with other institutions including LSTMH (UK) and KIT (Holland) in short-term research projects. He has also served as an independent consultant to the Peruvian National Institute of Health in the development of evidence-based policies for health interventions in tuberculosis, mental health, and chronic diseases.
His interest in the epidemiology of HIV and STIs in Peru led Eddy to his current work at UCLA PGH. In addition, Eddy devotes time to his passion for teaching, giving lectures on research methods and epidemiology at the UPCH School of Graduate Studies.
